APR Estimator: Show the Cash-Flow Assumptions

Estimate the annualized rate implied by a regular payment stream. Use this tool to understand a quote’s cash flows—not to certify a legally compliant APR or infer a lender violation.

Estimate the Regular-Period APR

Describe the cash-flow timing

Enter net funds made available at the start, one equal monthly payment and the number of payments. The baseline assumes the first payment occurs exactly one monthly period later and every later payment is equally spaced. It does not model odd first periods, changing payment amounts or an irregular final balloon.

Classify included fees

Include a fee in the cash-flow model only once. If $50 is deducted from a $1,000 advance, initial net funds are $950. Do not also subtract the same $50 as a separate payment. Which charges belong in a statutory APR depends on the applicable disclosure rules; your calculator assumptions are not a substitute for those rules. CFPB Regulation Z §1026.18: Content of disclosures CFPB Regulation Z §1026.22: Determination of APR

Read the result as an estimate

The solver finds monthly i such that net funds = payment × [1 − (1 + i)^−n] / i. It reports annualized nominal estimate = 12 × i and effective annual rate = (1 + i)^12 − 1. The labels differ deliberately. If total payments equal net funds, the regular-period estimate is zero. This implementation does not estimate negative rates or irregular cash-flow APRs.

Compare with the lender disclosure

A difference from the agreement’s APR is a reason to check timing, fee classification, rounding and the amount financed. It is not, by itself, proof of an unlawful charge. Keep the lender’s actual disclosure beside your modeled inputs and ask the lender to explain a material discrepancy. CFPB Regulation Z §1026.22: Determination of APR

Use the result to narrow real options

Use the loan payment calculator for amortization from a nominal rate and the two-offer calculator for equal-cash comparisons. Do not rank an estimate as a guaranteed rate available to you; the tool has not underwritten your application.

Boundary Cases for APR Estimator

Normal: $1,000 received and one $1,020 payment one monthly period later imply 2% for the period: 24% annualized nominal and about 26.824% effective annual. Edge: $1,000 received and one $1,000 payment imply 0%. Incomplete: A missing first-period assumption means the legal APR remains unverified. Error: Payments totaling less than the initial proceeds are outside this nonnegative-rate estimator.
