The Total Cost of a Loan: Every Required Dollar

Compare every required dollar against the cash you actually receive. This cost calculator separates deducted, financed and separately paid fees so the same charge is not counted twice—or omitted entirely.

Calculate Every Required Dollar

Separate amount borrowed from amount received

Start with contractual principal and net proceeds. A deducted charge reduces the cash that reaches you even when the repayment is based on the full principal.

Money paid directly to an existing creditor is also different from cash deposited into your account. Include it as a benefit paid on your behalf where the comparison calls for it, but do not describe it as spendable cash.

Classify each fee once

Fee treatment Cash-flow effect Common error
Withheld Reduces proceeds Subtracting it from cash and adding it again to already inclusive cost
Financed Increases the balance that is repaid Ignoring interest charged on the financed balance
Paid separately Adds a separate outflow Forgetting it because it is absent from the monthly payment
Optional Included only when actually selected Calling it mandatory or automatically free

Lenders may charge origination or other fees; use the current agreement to identify which apply. CFPB: Do personal installment loans have fees?

Calculate the total scheduled outflow

Add every scheduled payment, including any final adjustment or balloon, then add separate mandatory outflows not already included. Use actual dates and the payment count.

For a simple cash loan, total outflow minus net cash received is a useful total-dollar cost measure. It is not a substitute for the creditor's statutory finance-charge or APR disclosure.

Compare the same need and payoff date

Compare equal cash needs and equivalent payoff assumptions. A loan providing $950 and another providing $1,000 are not identical cash solutions, even if their principals match.

If one option remains outstanding longer, show the extra months as well as the total cost. Do not rank an option solely by a lower first payment.

Use this decision before continuing

Save principal, net proceeds, fee treatment, payment count and total outflow with the source date. Recalculate if the agreement changes before acceptance.

If a fee or final payment is missing, label the total incomplete. Do not fill unknown fields with zero just to produce a favorable comparison.

Cases That Change the Total Cost Personal Loan Decision

Normal: $1,000 principal less a $50 withheld fee gives $950 received. With $1,134 scheduled repayment and no separate charges, simplified cost is $1,134 − $950 = $184.

Edge: adding the same withheld $50 again would produce $234 and double-count that fee.

Incomplete: a separate mandatory charge is not known. Show $184 as the known-component cost, not the final total.
