Borrowing decision guide

Check Whether Consolidation Actually Reduces the Cost

Consolidation should be tested as a replacement repayment plan, not as an automatic saving. List the balances being paid off, compare the old and new payment paths, and include fees and any cash that does not reach those creditors.

A smaller monthly payment may help cash flow while still increasing the lifetime cost. The calculator shows both results.

List the debts a new loan would replace

Use an up-to-date balance or payoff amount for each debt, the current rate, payment and remaining schedule where known. Do not assume a credit-card minimum payment creates a fixed payoff date.

Mark debts paid directly by the new lender separately from debts you must pay yourself. Keep an old account in the plan until its payment is confirmed. Borrowing enough to cover a balance does not prove that balance was actually cleared.

Compare a matched payoff timeline

Compare equal objectives: the same debts, no unacknowledged new purchases and a stated payoff horizon. A twelve-month old-debt plan and a thirty-six-month new loan are not equal-time comparisons.

Result Old debts Replacement loan
Monthly pressure Existing payment totals New scheduled payment
Payoff timing Modeled from actual terms and behavior Contractual schedule
Total outflow Interest and payments over the selected plan Payments plus required separate charges
Remaining balances Shown, not assumed zero Shown after actual creditor allocation

Use a separate scenario if you expect to keep spending on a revolving account.

Account for fees and direct-payment conditions

A deducted fee can leave the replacement loan short of the payoff total. In an illustrative $1,000 new loan, paying an $800 old balance and a $50 fee leaves $150 extra cash. That is new cash, not debt forgiveness or savings.

Check the provider's eligible creditor types, payment method, processing time and any conditions attached to a direct-pay discount. Continue normal payments on the old debt until the responsible creditor confirms the correct payoff handling.

Avoid rebuilding the balances you clear

Decide how you will avoid replacing cleared balances with new charges. Otherwise, the new loan can sit beside new card debt rather than replace it.

Compare a smaller consolidation scope, a creditor arrangement or a credit-counseling discussion where appropriate. Do not pay to consolidate a debt that already has better terms without quantifying what changes. OneMain explicitly notes that consolidation or refinancing can increase total finance charges under a higher rate or longer term. OneMain personal loan landing page

Compare My Old and New Repayment Plans shows total outflow, horizon differences and cash left after creditor allocations. Keep each debt's terms and the new loan's charges available for the calculation.

Use the loan comparison tool for equal-cash pricing and early payoff when you plan extra payments. Only a complete, matched calculation can support a savings statement.

Cases That Change the Debt Consolidation Personal Loans Decision

Normal: Two hypothetical old balances of $500 and $300 total $800. A $1,000 replacement loan with a $50 deducted fee can allocate $800 to them and leaves $150, before any additional costs.

Edge: An old creditor's updated payoff amount is $825. The extra cash falls to $125; recheck before claiming the loan covers all obligations.

Incomplete: One revolving debt has no stated payment behavior. Show its payoff projection as unresolved instead of inventing a fixed term or a savings total.
