Renewing or Refinancing a Loan: Compare the New Debt

Compare a renewal or refinance by the new debt it creates and the net cash it adds. Paying off an old balance can consume most of a new loan, so a headline amount is not the amount available for a new expense.

Compare Net New Cash and Debt

Confirm whether renewal exists for this product

Verify whether the current lender offers a renewal, refinance, modification or another option for your specific account. These are not interchangeable processes.

A past product policy or an advertisement for new applicants does not establish an option for an existing borrower. Ask the actual servicer for written terms.

Calculate net new cash after payoff

Subtract the dated old-loan payoff and any deducted charges from the new proceeds. Keep separately paid fees and direct payments visible.

Use a payoff quote, not only the principal balance, when the calculation will be used for a real transaction. Pending payments can change the amount that must be settled.

Compare a modified plan with a new loan

Compare Existing or modified account New loan
Cash received now May be none Net after payoff and charges
Payment Current or agreed modification New schedule
Remaining term Existing or modified end date May restart the obligation
Fees Only documented charges New origination or other charges if applicable
Total outflow From today forward From new closing forward

Do not borrow solely to hide an unaffordable payment

A lower payment can result from a longer term rather than lower cost. If the underlying budget remains negative, a new loan may only postpone the same problem.

Use payment difficulties to prepare a support request and compare a documented modification without assuming that another loan is the only route.

Use this decision before continuing

The result should show net new cash, the change in scheduled payment, the new end date and future total outflow. Keep these together before accepting a refinance.

If renewal is not confirmed for the account, save the comparison as a question list. Do not turn it into a claim that Holiday Finance currently renews loans.

Cases That Change the Loan Renewal Refinance Options Decision

Normal: $1,000 new principal, $800 old-loan payoff and $50 deducted fee leave $150 in new cash.

Edge: the payoff quote rises to $825 before closing. Net new cash becomes $125.

Incomplete: the lender only provides a current principal balance, not a payoff quote. The final new-cash figure remains provisional.
