This calculator helps organize costs and timing without making decisions about the service itself.
Ask for an itemized price list
Request itemized prices and a written statement for the goods and services you select. The FTC explains consumers' rights to pricing information and to a statement of chosen items before accepting funeral arrangements. FTC: Shopping for funeral services by phone or online
Compare the same selected services, not packages with different inclusions. Keep third-party charges and any non-declinable service fee visible rather than assuming every item is optional.
Check prepaid and benefit sources
Check prepaid arrangements, confirmed insurance payments, available family contributions and any applicable benefit with the responsible organization. Record who receives the money and when.
An application for a benefit or an expected policy payment is not cash available today. Do not subtract the same prepaid service once as a lower price and again as a cash contribution.
Compare payment plans without rushing consent
| Cost question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Amount payable now | May differ from the full arrangement total |
| Payment plan issuer | Identifies whether the arrangement is credit |
| Interest and mandatory fees | Makes the full cost visible |
| Term and first due date | Shows obligations after the service |
| Cancellation or change terms | Relevant before committing to selected items |
Calculate only the remaining expense
Choose the scope first, then calculate what remains after confirmed prepaid coverage and cash. Keep additional optional items outside the base comparison until you intentionally include them.
A financing limit is not a spending recommendation. The affordable amount comes from the repayment budget and the actual selected cost.
Finance only the remaining verified gap
Save the itemized funding summary to discuss with the provider or family. Compare a documented payment arrangement with external borrowing on equal cash need and timing.
Continue only after the creditor, material terms and destination are identified. No guarantee of a benefit, approval or same-day funding is made here.
Three Ways the Funeral Loans Gap Can Change
Normal: a $4,000 selected arrangement, $2,000 of confirmed prepaid coverage and $500 available cash leave a $1,500 gap.
Edge: an additional expected benefit has not been approved. Keep the gap at $1,500 and show the benefit separately.
Incomplete: only a package total is available. Obtain the selected-item statement so duplicate or optional charges do not silently enter the financing amount.
