Borrowing decision guide

Loan Alternatives Matched to the Reason You Need Money

Start with the expense you need to solve. A payment arrangement, assistance program, cash-funded reduction and a new loan can produce different obligations and timelines.

Use the route finder to compare access, cost and the remaining gap without treating every alternative as free money.

Find a Route for My Expense

Start with the bill or purchase

Identify the payee, confirmed amount, deadline and available cash. A bill due today needs a different timing check from a purchase that can be postponed.

Use a specific expense page when there is a meaningful prior step: medical balance verification, rent budget planning or repair-gap calculation.

Distinguish grants, payment plans and debt

Route What changes What to verify
Grant or assistance May reduce a qualifying expense Eligibility, award and payment date
Payee arrangement Changes timing or schedule Written acceptance and any charges
Reduced purchase Reduces the expense What is genuinely optional or deferrable
Loan Creates a repayment obligation Net cash, cost, eligibility and delivery
Family or employer help May have repayment or other conditions Terms, timing and relationship implications

Check access and timing

A resource listed online is not necessarily available to you. Confirm location, eligibility, funding availability and timing with the organization responsible.

For Texas community referrals, use 2-1-1 Texas with your ZIP and need. A referral is not an approved award and must not be deducted as confirmed cash.

Compare the remaining cost

Compare the same expense and date across routes. A no-interest arrangement with a required fee may still have a cost; a longer loan can lower a payment while increasing total outflow.

Do not sort alternatives by which one pays a referral commission. The useful order is whether the route solves the need, when it can work and what obligation remains.

Use this decision before continuing

Your result is a short list of viable next actions plus any unresolved conditions. A route that avoids borrowing is a valid completed result.

When borrowing remains necessary, carry the reduced, verified gap into the amount planner instead of starting again with the largest advertised balance.

Cases That Change the Alternatives To Personal Loans Decision

Normal: a $500 bill has a confirmed $200 assistance award available before payment and $100 of personal cash. The remaining gap is $200.

Edge: the assistance is only applied for. The confirmed gap is $400; show the $200 case as conditional.

Incomplete: the payee's arrangement terms are missing. Do not rank it as free or effective until confirmed.

Use the Current Texas Assistance Route

TDHCA says the texasutilityhelp.com application site is closed. Its replacement instruction is to use Help for Texans, select utility-bill help and search by city or county. This locates an assistance provider; it does not establish an award or immediate payment. TDHCA: Texas Utility Help website closure and replacement route
