Identify the asset securing the loan
Identify the actual collateral: a savings balance, a vehicle or another asset named in the agreement. A deposit-secured loan and a vehicle-secured loan do not create the same practical risk. Do not assume every personal loan requires collateral or that a second signer is the same as pledging an asset.
Compare cash received with assets restricted
Show loan proceeds and restricted assets on separate lines. If a hypothetical $1,000 loan is backed by a $1,000 deposit that becomes restricted, receiving $1,000 does not mean both sums are freely spendable. Fees, lien costs or interest should be entered according to the agreement rather than hidden outside the comparison.
Read the consequences of default
The consequences of default depend on the asset, agreement and applicable law. Ask what event permits action against the collateral, what notice and cure provisions apply, and how release works after repayment. This calculator does not give a jurisdiction-specific legal conclusion about repossession or setoff. Obtain qualified advice for an actual dispute.

Use the collateral checklist before comparing the payment. If losing access to the pledged asset would endanger essential transport or emergency savings, compare unsecured options and a smaller funding need. Do not continue solely because a secured quote has a lower headline rate.
Cases That Change the Secured Personal Loans Decision
Normal: You can identify the asset, restricted value, net cash and release conditions. Edge: A $1,000 deposit becomes locked while $1,000 is borrowed; do not count $2,000 as accessible cash. Incomplete: The asset is named but the release or default provisions are missing. The security-risk check remains unresolved.
