Prequalification: See an Estimate Without Mistaking It for Approval

Compare preliminary terms without treating them as money you have already been approved to receive. The prequalification checker records the stage, inquiry type, estimated amount and remaining conditions, so your next consent is an informed decision.

It does not request a credit report or issue a lender decision.

What the prequalification result means

An estimate can help narrow choices, but it is not the same document as a final agreement. Check whether the provider calls its result prequalification, preapproval or an offer subject to verification, and read the conditions behind that label.

Record the estimate date and expiry if one is stated. Do not invent a validity period when none appears.

When the credit check changes

Ask when, by whom and for what purpose a credit inquiry occurs. The CFPB distinguishes inquiries that can affect scores from soft inquiries that do not. CFPB: What is a credit inquiry?

This local checklist makes no inquiry. That statement does not describe what an outside lender may do after you continue. The next screen's disclosure governs that outside step.

Compare estimates without mixing final offers

Comparison field Preliminary estimate Final agreement
Amount Requested or conditionally estimated Approved contractual principal
Net cash Estimate only if fees are known Proceeds after actual deductions
Price Range or conditional price Documented APR and charges
Remaining checks Income, identity or other conditions listed Conditions still required before disbursement
Usable money No funds implied Still depends on closing and delivery

Read a new authorization before accepting it, particularly if it permits a different inquiry or data transfer. A selection in this planner is not consent to any lender's application.

If a form names a recipient you did not expect, pause. Save the non-sensitive estimate and verify the provider using its official contact channel rather than a number in an unsolicited message.

Only continue where the requirement is confirmed

Your result should show what is estimated, what is verified and what remains conditional. Compare equivalent amounts and cash received, not only the lowest advertised monthly payment.

When a provider's current terms and destination have been confirmed, continue on its official application route. If those facts are absent, the next action is to verify them—not to submit the same details to an unidentified network.

Confirmed, Failed and Unknown Personal Loan Prequalification Soft Credit Check Conditions

Normal: an estimate describes $2,000 subject to income verification. Save it as conditional and compare the payment to your budget.

Changed facts: verified income supports a smaller amount or different rate. Recalculate net cash and payment using the new document; the earlier estimate does not override it.

Incomplete: the inquiry type or recipient is unstated. The checker returns “confirm before continuing,” not an approval.
