This page records a change checklist; it does not access a bank account or submit a stop-payment instruction.
Know what you authorized
Review the authorization's recipient, payment amount or method of determining it, frequency, timing and account. Keep the loan agreement and debit authorization distinct.
An authorization to read account information is not necessarily permission to withdraw money, and a debit authorization is not proof a payment has posted.
Use official steps for changes or revocation
The CFPB describes contacting the company and bank about revoking automatic-payment permission, following bank stop-payment procedures where applicable, and monitoring subsequent transactions. CFPB: Stop automatic payments from a bank account
Use those official channels for the actual request. A local checkbox here has no effect on a creditor's or bank's records.
Plan another valid payment method
| After changing autopay | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Remaining debt | Amount and due dates still applicable |
| Alternative method | A method the creditor accepts |
| Discount or pricing condition | Whether changing autopay affects it |
| Pending debit | Whether already in process |
| Bank instruction | Effective date and any applicable fee |
Keep information about requests
Keep copies or confirmations of requests in your own secure records. Note dates, the responsible organization and the instructions it provided without storing full account numbers here.
Check the next statement. If a transaction occurs after a change request, use the official bank and creditor support process rather than sending sensitive details to an unverified contact.
Cases That Change the Loan Automatic Payment Authorization Decision
Normal: the borrower revokes debit permission through the appropriate channels and confirms an accepted manual repayment method. The debt still requires payment.
Edge: a debit is already pending. Verify its status before making a second payment.
Incomplete: no alternative method is confirmed. The checklist remains incomplete rather than treating cancellation as debt relief.
